Providence River Boat Company offers all types of open-air boat tours of Providence, and it truly is an experience worth checking out. Whether you’re visiting from out of state/for work, traveling with family, or even a RI native, these tours really appeal to everyone.
Offering so many different types of tours you can choose from that fit for any type of occasion: Cruise the Providence waterways and experience 300 years of architectural history on the Providence Architecture Tour, take the kids for a spooky Haunted Boat ride on their Providence Ghost Tours, or even a nice date night on their Twilight River Cruise.
I got to experience the Sunset Cruise that they offer. A 50-minute narrated sunset cruise through the Providence River, Riverwalk, Waterplace Park, and the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier, and the Providence Industrial Harbor.
Not only was this tour beautiful, with perfect weather, but I could not believe how informative it was. I’ve lived in Rhode Island for all of my 24 years and I learned some facts about Providence I probably never would’ve known about if it wasn’t for this tour. Like the “Great Gale” of 1815 that nearly wiped out the entire city of Providence, at a time when the word “hurricane” didn’t even exist. Or the I-95 bridge that connects Interstate 95 with Interstate 195, and how it was manufactured and built right here in Rhode Island at Quonset Point. The bridge was transported 15 miles via barge ship, and was also featured on the History Channel’s, Mega Moves. I remember hearing about this new bridge being put into place when I was younger, so it was really interesting to actually learn how they pulled off such a challenging task.
Our tour guide and Captain, Tom, was awesome and very eager to share his knowledge, he had an answer for any question you had. They did a great job with making sure all the appropriate safety measures were put in place, while still giving you a beautiful and enjoyable boat ride making you feel like a tourist in your own city!
